These rude comments have been made to me ever since I was little. It's not just on social media. From being a little kid and other kids laughing at the way way I talked to being in high school and others stating I wasn't Mexican because I wasn't fluent ins Spanish to currently being an adult and people still make those same comments on social media everyday. After spending the last few months really getting to know the Deaf community here in Seattle and getting to meet people older than I am who have been through the experiences that I've been through, it was a hard realization for me to have knowing that this will be a constant battle that I will always have go through. Having to prove to others that l'm capable of doing my job, having to advocate for myself that I deserve equal access, having to defend myself from the rude and/or ignorant comments. And to those people who say "just ignore them!", it's much easier said than done - considering the fact that this treatment id something I've experienced almost everyday for my entire life. Now I am understanding more why the Deaf community is so close-knitted, why some eventually stop talking altogether, and why some completely disconnect from those who are hearing. After all, why would you want to be in a world where you're constantly judged for the way you talk, for how you were raised, or how you manage your current obstacles or treated as someone who is less than? It wasn't until after high school, I started being more comfortable with talking again, or college when I started being comfortable signing again. Even now, 1 still struggle with my confidence in publicly showing my cochlear implant. This post isn't made to get pity, but it was made to spread awareness on the struggles we go through. These feelings are real and I know that I'm not the only Deaf individual who feels this way, because many of us do. #deafnurse #cochlearimplant #ASL #education #awareness #deaf
