I want to learn how to write the melodies of songs as piano sheet music by ear. I’m having trouble figuring out the exact rhythm and note durations of the vocal melody.
As far as I understand, the melody in the treble clef is often written according to the lyrics/vocal rhythm. So I’ve been trying to figure out how long each syllable/note should be by keeping the song’s BPM and time signature in mind and counting the beats.
The problem is that sometimes the lyrics don’t line up exactly with the beats. A syllable or note can fall between two beats rather than directly on a beat, and when that happens, I have a hard time figuring out exactly how long the note lasts or where it should be placed rhythmically.
I also want to mention that I already slow the song down when I’m trying to transcribe it. However, even when I slow it down considerably, I still have this problem, so I’m specifically looking for techniques other than simply slowing the song down.
Another problem is that when I try to analyze a section very carefully and slowly in my head, I sometimes accidentally change the rhythm without realizing it. I can start imagining the notes as being longer or shorter than they actually are, and then I write them down incorrectly.
How can I accurately figure out the rhythm and duration of vocal notes when transcribing a song by ear, especially when the notes fall between the beats? Is there a technique or method that would make this easier, other than slowing the song down?
