In college, I delivered soda to all the inner city grocery stores in Milwaukee. There was a neighborhood grocery in every neighborhood. Now they’re gone.

Grew up in a neighborhood in the 60s where every 3 or 4 blocks was a mom & pop grocery store where the owners lived upstairs. the knew our families and we knew theirs. One income, one car was enough.

It didn’t just go like this for food. I’m in the coatings industry and the big boxes did the exact same thing to the paint manufacturers and independent retailers.

Once the chain has cornered the market, they raise prices to what the local places would have been (or more) and pocket that extra money.

YUP! The changes to shipping with the shift caused shipping monopolies in small towns, too. We also had Greyhound & Trains up until the 80s here.
