lil extra context: it was expected that students DONT nssarily agree w their debate topics. The lesson was learning that a persuasive argmnt can be made for ANYthing + what works. (not justifying it)

It’s not a debate if Japan deserved it lol, it’s about if it was essential to ending the war and to what extent that could justify it. It’s also an exploration of historiography in most classes.

High school history teacher here 🙋🏻♀️This is not a universal experience. Curriculum varies by state, but also Socratic seminars and debates are chosen by individual teachers or schools.

I live in Colorado, where there is a relocation camp. We didn’t do this debate but instead had a class mate share stories from her grandma who was in the camp and explain those experiences

Grew up in SoCal & half Japanese, we had these debates in ap history sophomore year, so around 15-16 years old. students were just assigned stances, and thankfully I was put on the anti-bomb side.

this debate in HS was uncomfortable. you make a good point that just in asking the question, we're leaving it open that these events were somehow ok. and then how do we think about future conflicts?

We had the atomic bomb debate in my 8th grade history class… fairly heavy material for 12-13 year olds but it’s hard to overstate how normal of a lesson it felt at the time

These kinds of debates were not a universal experience. HS history curriculum is very dependent on where you live and can be quite subjective to who’s teaching and their preferences.

in my AP US history class, we were forced to pick a colony (and eventually state) and stick with it through the 2 years and have regular "senate debates" throughout learning the history and take 1/

this happened my sophomore year, we had to write an argumentative essay and its focus is mainly persuasive arguments not the actual event itself. i thought id go out of the mold and say yes they did

This discussion makes me think about I learned more about US sins in English class than history. Learned about internment reading farewell to manzanar in 8th grade. Was never taught in history.

Not history class, but I had to read Obasan by Joy Kogawa in AP Lit. I think Canada’s response to the war in the pacific and Japanese-Canadian experiences are rarely talked about, esp in the US

I was in an Odyssey class in 8th grade and we had to write a paper explaining why or why not we believe the bombs were justified. Too young to really understand. Had a great US history teacher as (1/2

honestly every single history class my teachers start off by saying what they teach is forced by the curriculum so they speed by what the book teaches

in my hs we did NOT need to do that, instead we discussed about presidents and policies 🤷♀️i believe it depends on who your history teacher is and their methods

I actually remember doing that debate in Canada. It wasn't pleasant. Having a very proud Japanese father didn't help either. Instead of an official debate, we were simply asked the question.
