Audio Engineering student . I've had quite a lot of experience with mixing in Dolby Atmos now. Currently it's more of a marketing gimmick since Atmos music only physically works as intended with a (1)

Dolby Atmos, when done correctly, is second to none.

the first time i heard “Rocketman” in Atmos with simple airpods I cried. heard stuff i had never heard before. i felt like i WAS elton john in the band. it’s a magical experience when done right.

never once have been listening to a song and thought “i wish the drums sounded more like they were above my head”. if that much space was desirable, binaural mixing would be much more popular

unless the music is specifically mixed for atmos, i don’t bother, but when it is, it’s pretty cool

I just started to rethink my composing process. I think its the right way work on immersive first and do the stereo after. Feels perfect for ambient.

We work in Dolby Atmos everyday and love the format. The engineers we know also love working in the format. Would love to chat with you about this ✌️

We mix in ATMOS as well! As a lot of the comments have already mentioned, if done correctly, there’s nothing like it. This format definitely pushes the medium we all love- MUSIC! Coming down to the economics of it, instead of having two separate engineers work in silos, I highly believe in empowering the artists and the producers and have them work with the Atmos engineers. You can even have the same engineer who knows how to mix in Atmos do both the mixes to bring in more efficiencies and to bring the cost down. Happy to chat more and answer any questions you have!

Oh I could say A LOT about this as a producer/engineer. The consensus at the AES show this year from most of my colleagues is that it’s a scam.

This is a hole in my knowledge as a music producer. I feel like I should learn how to mix in Atmos.

Hiya, I work with Atmos and for Fiedler Audio. They create Atmos production tools. We understand the concerns of the producers because currently the creation process for Atmos is a nightmare…

Hate it. I’ve given it a chance multiple times and I’ve never thought it was an improvement over stereo.

As a film composer who worked with Dolby Atmos for some projects I realised that it only makes sense if you compose for Dolby Atmos specifically like thinking about objects and moving things around

I have beats earbuds that allow for apple spacial and it usually doesn’t sound good when mixed for Atmos. Kills energy in rock music. It often de-emphasizes the vocals in pop.

As a casual music listener, I do like Dolby atmos when driving cause it sounds like surround sound in my car but some albums can sound very different which is distracting.

I’ve never had the headphones to listen to it but I love lossless with Apple Music. I’ve heard some of the mixes are sloppy but can be cool if it’s done right.
