Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday announced retaliatory tariffs on the U.S., calling President Trump’s decision to ignite a trade war “a dumb thing to do” as he vowed to never “back down.” “Canadians are reasonable and we are polite, but we will not back down from a fight — not when our country and the wellbeing of everyone in it is at stake,” he said in a press conference from Ottawa. The outgoing Canadian leader said his country will impose 25% tariffs on more than $100 billion worth of U.S. goods: $20 billion immediately, followed by another $86 billion in three weeks. “Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. tariffs are withdrawn and not a moment sooner,” the prime minister said. “And should these tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue non-tariff measures, which will demonstrate that there are no winners in a trade war.” The move comes after President Trump slapped 25% duties on goods from Canada and Mexico, the U.S.’s top two trading partners, as well as an additional 10% in tariffs on goods from China. The president said the taxes are meant to spur the Canadian and Mexican governments to take more aggressive actions to stem the flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S., particularly fentanyl. Prime Minister Trudeau questioned why the U.S. leader would target one of his country’s closest partners at the expense of the American people. “Today, the United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, their closest friend,” he said. “At the same time, they’re talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin — a lying, murderous dictator. Make that make sense.” Addressing President Trump directly, the prime minister said: “Even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.” “Americans will lose jobs. Americans will pay more for groceries, for gas, for cars, for homes,” he said. “As of this morning, markets are down and inflation is set to rise dramatically all across your country.” President Trump, mocking the prime minister as a

"Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S., our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!" he said on social media.
