As a non-football fan, it just strikes me as people wanting to be closer to the action/feel closer to the team. Like seeing a small band in a small venue vs. seeing someone at the O2 Arena.

I agree, but i think it misses some key drivers such as low league football being a different/very fun type of football, wanting to support smaller businesses/clubs and it being a cheap day out

Where I live, we don't have a "top level" football team (Carlisle is the nearest city), so my local football team (Workington) is still very much a working class, community endeavour.

I think we should all support smaller teams though, ultimately building and contributing towards a smaller more community focused club is much better than chucking your money into the rotting bottomless pit of clubs like Man United and Chelsea
