It makes sense mathematically it’s the number of letters in Christmas add up to 52 with the other cards I don’t think I’m explaining this well at all though

doesn't work every time if you end up with 2 tens and 2 other high cards you don't have enough cards left over to count down what they add up to

Explanation: the card is 44th from the top. Let n_i be the value on the top of the ith pile. There are 11 - n_i cards in the ith pile so a total of 44 - (n_1 + n_2 + n_3 + n_4) cards on the table.
