NMA-TV Mining Minute 8-21-2025 The New York Times looks at how US talks with Brazil over its millions of tons of rare earth minerals have been disrupted by recent trade disputes. The two countries have reportedly been in talks for years to determine how the US could help Brazil unlock its vast reserves of rare earths. But when President Trump targeted the country with 50 percent tariffs in support of the former Brazilian president, who is facing criminal charges, Brazil’s president withdrew discussions of cooperation on critical minerals, instead signaling that the country will now seek partnerships with other allies – like India – to tap its rare earth deposits. While there may be questions around the US – Brazil alliance, Australia’s ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd, this week made the case for Australia to become “a superpower in critical minerals and rare earths” and a key partner to the US at a forum hosted by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. Rudd laid out the strengths of the Australian mining industry in pitching the country as a key partner to the US in countering China’s grip on critical mineral supply chains. And I’d like to close with a plug for a new video from the National Mining Association. This summer we traveled to mining operations across the country to talk to the hardworking Americans at each location and learn about the wide range of jobs available in this great industry. I encourage you to go to any of the national Mining Associations social media platforms or our website and watch what they have to say – you may be surprised by the opportunities available in modern mining. That’s your mining minute for this morning, highlighting some of the mining-related matters that are on our minds here in Washington and beyond. Follow us on the National Mining Association’s channels, as well as on Minerals Make Life and Count on Coal, for more on the latest news and policies impacting mining.
