Wrapping two bowls for a journey across the pond. I sandwich the two bowls together really tightly with a thick wodge of tissue paper between them. At this point already, I want the two to be encased so tightly that they don’t move or rattle. Then, the bundle is wrapped in two layers of paper bubble wrap, (apologies for how this stuff smells—something in its manufacturing process makes this stuff reek). They’re swaddled in squares of the stuff, from corner to corner, so only one bit of tape is used per layer, like I was taught in Mashiko, Japan, when wrapping hundreds of Ken Matsuzaki’s pots. Then, I use thick corrugated cardboard to wrap the piece again, twice. This makes for a very sturdy package, which I place in a box in such a way that it resides in the very middle, away from the sides with packaging chips COMPLETELY surrounding it. No part of the wrapped pots should touch the outer box. As it’s closed, I make sure to fill the box up enough, so that once closed, absolutely NOTHING inside rattles around, (apart from sometimes the little business card or note). It should feel utterly solid, the box bursting almost, the pots suspended in peanuts. Lastly, the box is sealed with water activated tape, this stuff is really sticky and holds boxes closed supremely well. Then, the ends are covered in plastic fragile tape and it’s wrapped all the way around the box. I’ll be switching this to paper-tape eventually. I have a box with about twenty rolls of this stuff left, which should last for a number of years yet. Then, all that’s left are the customs documents and label and a patient wait for the parcels to be collected. #wrapping #pottery #asmr #handmade #howto #satisfying
