Cassie Jo Stoddart was tragically harmed by two of her high school classmates while house-sitting for her aunt and uncle in Bannock County, Idaho, on September 22, 2006. That night, Cassie invited her boyfriend, Matt Beckham, to join her at the house. Beckham invited his friend Torey Adamcik, who brought along Brian Draper. Adamcik and Draper had been classmates of Cassie, but they had concerning aspirations. They wanted to become infamous, inspired by the movie "Scream." The boys devised a list that contained the names of several classmates, with Cassie unfortunately at the top. The two boys spent about two hours at the house before leaving. Draper had unlocked the basement door so that he and Adamcik could sneak back in later that same evening. When they returned, the boys parked down the street and dressed in dark clothing, gloves, and painted masks. They re-entered the home through the unlocked door as Cassie and her boyfriend watched TV upstairs. They made loud noises in the basement, trying to scare them. When that failed, they found the circuit breaker and cut all the power to the house. Beckham consequently called his mother, hoping to get permission to spend the night so Cassie could feel safe. But Beckham's mother refused and offered, instead, to have Cassie spend the night at the Beckham house. Ever responsible, Cassie declined, saying she needed to be there for the pets and the home left in her care. At around 10:30 p.m., Beckham's mother picked him up, leaving Cassie Jo Stoddart at the house alone. On his way home, Beckham called Adamcik's cell phone. Draper opened and slammed a closet door, hoping to scare Stoddart, who was asleep on the couch. When this attempt to frighten her failed, Draper and Adamcik attacked. Torey Adamcik was interrogated that same day, and he initially told detectives that he and Draper had gone to the house at approximately 8:30 p.m. to attend a party. When the party never kicked into action, he and Draper left the house to watch a movie, after which both boys slept at Adamcik's house. But when the detectives asked Adamcik about the movie he had reportedly seen that night, he couldn't remember anything about it. Shortly after this, Draper was interrogated. He claimed that he had been in the room when Adamcik harmed Cassie but denied taking part in the incident. He changed his story to admit that he had participated, but only under orders from Adamcik. He guided the authorities to evidence, which included four knives, a mask, latex gloves, and the videotape that contained not only footage of the boys planning Cassie's murder but also their reactions afterward. A transcript of the tape was used in court. It displayed how the boys had hoped to make history by becoming infamous. Brian Draper was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder on April 17, 2007. Torey Adamcik was convicted on the same charges on June 8, 2007. Both received life sentences without the possibility of parole.
