The second and third and fifth letters are pi from maths, which is p, so I can see ippopotamos emerging - so I guess hippopotamus

Greek. Hippopotamus. There are three Pi symbols quite close to each other and the only English translation I can think would match would be hippopotamus.

The rough breathing mark over the iota shows us that it's Ancient Greek (or pre-1982 Modern Greek).

2nd and third characters look like π, the two vowels look like alpha rather than a. I don't know if it's actually greek, as the typeface feels a bit weird...

From my side, it is the experience that right on tells me it is Greek. Now, such question for children, you mean 6 years onward?, could be overwhelming to answer.
