Shortly after A. H was appointed Chancellor of Germany in January 1933, the Nasi s consolidated their control of the country. Seeking to gain control of territories outside Germany, Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess tasked German-American immigrant Heinz Spanknobel with forming a powerful Nasi organization in the United States. Merging two small surviving groups, Spanknobel formed the Friends of New Germany in July 1933. With a membership of both German and German-American citizens, the Friends loudly supported the Nasi cause, raiding the offices of New York’s largest German-language newspaper, opposing Jewish boycotts of German businesses, and staging rallies in black-and-white uniforms emblazoned with swastikas. Spanknobel was deported in October 1933 for failing to register as a foreign agent, and two years later Hess called for the Friends leaders to return to Germany and for all German citizens to leave the organization. After the Friends disbanded, a subsequent group, officially unaffiliated with the German government, was formed—the German American Bund. The Bund continued its campaign of anti-Semitism, anti-Communism, and violent rhetoric, but wrapped it in patriotic and pro-American symbolism, displaying a portrait of George Washington as the “first Fascist.” The Bund reached its peak on February 20, 1939, when some 20,000 members held a “Pro-American Rally” at Madison Square Garden. Inside, booted Nasis filled the halls as speakers shouted abuse against President “Frank D. Rosenfeld” and his “Jewish Deal.” Outside, some 80,000 anti-Nasi demonstrators angrily protested the event, clashing with police and attempting to enter the arena and shut it down. The Bund was finally disbanded in late 1941 with the United States' declaration of war on Nasi Germany. #history #ww2history #ww2 #historytok #germany
