Did you know that patterns take 60+ hours to make and prepare before being published? Let me break it down for ya! Making - on average my patterns take about 30-50 hours to knit. If it’s a super bulky, that goes down to 15-20 ish. A worsted takes about 40ish hours. Grading - This is where you math out the other different sizes. On average a pattern with 9 sizes takes me 4-8 hours. 8 if it is being tricky and temperamental. 2 if it’s a piece of cake. Formatting - to get my pattern from paper to PowerPoint, this takes about 1-3 hours. Depending on tweaking and fussing around. Testers - a tester call alone take me 1 hour to set up, 3 hours to pick testers (and send out), and then about… 10ish+ hours over the 5-8 weeks that it’s running. 3.5 hours to input notes and set up the final pattern format. Photos - about an hour between taking and editing final photos. Listing and publishing - 1 hour to list the pattern in all my platforms, 30-45 minutes to create an email newsletter, 30 minutes to post the day of and respond to comments. This doesn’t include any of the time MARKETING the pattern, creating reels to show it off, creating posts on Pinterest, Instagram, tiktok ect. It’s… a lot. The minimum of those times listed above is 40.5 hours 🙈. And that’s if the pattern doesn’t give you troubles haha. Which we all know is not the norm. So when you say “I don’t buy patterns, cause they aren’t that much work”, I kindly ask you to reconsider. Cause the above also doesn’t include pattern support for the YEARS after. Are there any in here that surprised you? .
