Before you buy the clunker, get a prepurchase inspection. This will tell you how lon the car will last, but yes it's not a perfect system.

This is the only advice I don’t agree with. I see a new car as an investment in security, more sensors and technology to prevent accidents. Its expensive but I think its worth it.

10 year old Subaru every 10 years, pay cash. Had a car payment for 2 years of my life, it's miserable paying interest to an investment that is worthless in the end.

What if you own 2 old clunkers with kids??? Keep one as backup or spare care when they breakdown or are in repair. Holding cost was 8k for both vars

Generally agree EXCEPT for having something with “low insurance.” Don’t get minimums. FTR I don’t sell insurance. Indeed, we occasionally sue for car wrecks. Buy good insurance to protect yourself.
