In a recent interview, with #LetsTalkWithKat she confessed, “I testified falsely against [the lacrosse players] by saying that they r*ped me when they didn’t...I made up a story that wasn’t true...I hope that they can forgive me.” This confession comes after years of controversy and significant repercussions for the accused players and the university community. For those who aren’t familiar, In 2006, three Duke University lacrosse players— #DavidEvans, #CollinFinnerty, and #ReadeSeligmann—were falsely accused of r*ping Crystal Mangum, a student at North Carolina Central University who worked part-time as a stripper. The allegations stemmed from a party hosted by the lacrosse team at an off-campus house on March 13, 2006. The case quickly gained national attention due to its racial and class dynamics, as Mangum is Black and the accused players were white and from affluent backgrounds. Durham County District Attorney #MikeNifong aggressively pursued the case, despite inconsistencies in Mangum’s story and a lack of DNA evidence linking the players to the alleged crime. Nifong was later disbarred and briefly imprisoned for his misconduct during the investigation. On April 11, 2007, North Carolina Attorney General #RoyCooper dropped all charges against the players, declaring them “innocent” and victims of a “tragic rush to accuse”. The players later sued Duke University and settled reportedly worth $20 million each. Crystal Mangum continued to insist she was sexually assaulted until her recent confession, where she admitted to fabricating the allegations.
