High insulin levels promote fat storage and make it hard for your body to break down stored fat. This can lead to weight gain, especially around the abdominal area. Fourth, insulin resistance often occurs along with other metabolic problems, such as high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol levels, and abdominal obesity. This is known as metabolic syndrome and significantly increases the risk of diabetes and other metabolic issues. Finally, insulin resistance is often associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal disorder that affects women and can lead to irregular periods, fertility problems, and an increased risk of diabetes.
