@debsahoy: What is the most common emotion? @Martin Butler Envy is a natural response ro people who have more. Martin examines into human nature and explains why envy is the most prevalent emotion we experience. Far from being a trivial feeling, Martin reveals that envy is rooted in our biology as survival machines. As humans, we constantly compare ourselves with others, asking, “Am I stronger or weaker?” This need for survival fitness—measured by factors like money, social status, or personal achievements—fuels envy when we feel outmatched.
Martin uncovers the darker side of envy: how people use bragging as a tool to assert dominance and display their survival fitness. Whether it’s boasting about a luxury vacation, career success, or perfect family life, these actions are often deliberate attempts to put others down. This creates pain in others at their good fortune and, even more unsettlingly, pleasure at their misfortune.
But envy doesn’t stop there. Martin reveals how this emotion drives much of human interaction, from subtle power plays to outright deception. In a world where survival is a constant game of dominance, envy stands as the chief emotion shaping our relationships and behaviors.
By understanding envy, Martin challenges us to reflect on how this primal emotion impacts our lives and urges us to recognize the power dynamics at play.

Fridolin :
Is envy really such a common emotion? I would have said fear or something like that.

envy is just a secondary manifestation of fear, which is the most felt emotion.

I think it depends of the person, I always felt lucky not to suffer from it. Not that I'm not ever envious but is definitely an emotion I don't suffer from often.

Couldn’t a reasoned argument be made it’s actually fear? Maybe the root emotion isn’t being envious but an underlying fear of failure. Just a thought

I know people who still envy and they have everything, but they don't have a talent for instance, so they will envy humble person but they will never show it.😉

Martin, what about indifference, if you really don’t care about what others have?

i suspect it's anxiety. the brain is constantly looking for potential threats to protect us. we only have to think about a risk for this response to kick in & we live in times of acute social anxiety

In Quran :” (I seek refuge to you my lord) from the evil of the envious ones”. Envious people will try to harm others to take away from them what they envy them for.

I think it’s fear, unless you are afraid of being in the state of lack of the thing you envy the person for , you wouldn’t envy

Interesting perspective, Martin. In my faith, envy or covetousness has been red flagged. Consequently, I’m on the lookout for it within myself. It’s just one of many faults being excised.

The most important yoga sutra, be happy for the happy, compassionate for the miserable, joyous for the virtuous and indifferent to the evil and that holds the key to counteract envy!
