📚 Library of Alexandria The Library of Alexandria was one of the greatest centers of knowledge in the ancient world, a luminous symbol of humanity’s hunger to understand the universe. Built in the 3rd century BCE in the thriving city of Alexandria, it was established under the reign of Ptolemy I Soter and expanded by his successors. More than a building, it was a bold dream: to collect all the knowledge of the world. Ships arriving in Alexandria’s harbor were searched for books and manuscripts. Any scrolls found were copied; the originals were kept in the library, and copies were returned to their owners. At its height, the library is believed to have housed hundreds of thousands of scrolls, covering philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, poetry, and science. Scholars from across the Mediterranean gathered there. Figures like Euclid, Archimedes, and Eratosthenes were connected to its intellectual circle. Within its walls, Eratosthenes calculated the Earth’s circumference with astonishing accuracy over 2,000 years ago. The library was part of a larger institution called the Mouseion, a temple dedicated to the Muses, blending spirituality with scholarship. Knowledge was sacred. Learning was divine. Its destruction remains one of history’s great mysteries. Over centuries, through fires, political conflicts, and invasions, the library gradually declined and was ultimately lost. The exact moment of its fall is debated, often associated with events during the time of Julius Caesar, though historians believe its decline was more gradual than a single catastrophic blaze. Yet even in ruin, the Library of Alexandria became immortal. It represents the eternal human quest to gather wisdom, preserve memory, and illuminate darkness with understanding. Though its scrolls turned to ash, its legacy still whispers through every university, every archive, every book ever written. Today, near its ancient site, stands the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a tribute to that lost beacon of knowledge, rising again beside the Mediterranean as a reminder: Civilizations may fall, but the pursuit of knowledge never dies. #travel #egypt #traveltiktok #foryoupage #fyp
