Now that I have your attention, it’s back to basics this week for me, thrown mugs and handles, replenishing dwindling stocks with a few boards worth of these. The squashed piece at the start was crushed for two reasons. First, the handle was attached too far up the body, resulting in an overall shape that wasn’t in line with the rest of the pieces. In most cases I would have simply cut the handle off and tried again with another blank, but in this case, and secondly, the upper walls of this particular mug were trimmed far too finely. This meant that as the body was scored and slipped and the handle was pushed against it, despite my best efforts, it still deformed the interior wall. The flattened mug will be dried out on the radiator before being thrown into my reclaim bucket, where it begins its recycling process back into usable clay. Otherwise, the process begins by pulling a LONG strap that’s segmented off against a sharp edge, I use a ware board for this but you can equally just use the edge of your tabletop. These individual ‘blanks’ or ‘slugs’ or… ‘billets’, (can we decide on a term?), are then flared out, pressed onto a scored and slipped area on the mug, smoothed in, and then they’re pulled again into the final shape. It’s a quick process and speed certainly helps, as if the clay is overworked or saturated with too much water, it can weaken and you’ll have a more difficult time getting the handle to retain a proper, arching curve. It’s looped down and joined at the base of the cup, where, due to the angle of attachment, I don’t need to score and slip as I can smear the clay in with great force. Once cleaned up a little bit, they’re placed onto a plastic lined board, sprayed with water, then wrapped up tightly for a couple of days, so that the clay components of both handle and cup can acclimatise to each other, becoming the same consistency, whereupon they’ll be unwrapped and dried VERY slowly. This prevents cracks from developing around the joins—mostly—I’d say I still lose many 1/2 in every 100. #pottery #mugs #satisfying #asmr #potteryvideos #craft #maker
