The layers are highly organized patches that form with individuals in schools of the same size and type of animals (like this krill swarm). ⠀⁠ ⠀⁠ These animals organize as a predator-avoidance response. When attacked by a predator, the schools compress, but their neighbors expand so that they maintain a connection in the layer.
