It is humiliating to admit, but among friends we can tell the truth. Being alone can be horrible.   We want a partner. We don't want every weekend to stretch ahead of us unshared. We grow tired of holidays when everyone else seems to have somewhere to be. Yet there is a curious detail about loneliness that deserves attention. Being alone is not always equally painful.   Some evenings are excruciating. Others are peaceful. Sometimes solitude feels restorative, even pleasurable. The facts are identical. We are in the same apartment, looking out at the same sky, sitting on the same sofa. What changes is the meaning we attach to our situation.   At certain moments, being alone can feel entirely dignified. We may think of ourselves as people taking stock, recovering from a busy week or simply enjoying our own company. Solitude can seem like a state occupied by some of the most impressive figures in history. Beethoven spent long periods alone. So did Emily Dickinson and Agnes Martin.   Then another interpretation arrives. A darker voice starts speaking: Everyone has rejected you, there is something wrong with you, normal people do not end up like this.   The tragedy is that these thoughts often pass through our minds unnoticed. They masquerade as facts when they are really accusations.   Our deepest problem is rarely solitude itself, tt is the self hatred that loneliness attracts. It is the tendency to treat our circumstances as evidence against our worth.   How to apply this in your own life:   The next time loneliness feels overwhelming, pause before accepting every thought that accompanies it.   Ask yourself whether you are suffering from being alone or from the story you are telling yourself about being alone.   Bring hidden assumptions into the open. Would you judge a friend as harshly as you are judging yourself? Would you assume they were deficient, unlovable or contemptible because they spent a Sunday on their own?   A peaceful day by yourself is not proof of failure. There are no rational grounds to conclude that solitude says anything damning about your character.   You are alone. That is all.   Follow us for more useful ideas, every day.
