From what I’ve always been told, you’re supposed to push the applicator in a bit and then push the tampon out of it if that makes sense.

For tampons, you do exactly as you showed. You put it inside, push the plunger, and the tampon gets put inside. Then take out the plastic piece. (Cheap ones are cardboard) and trash it.
