Jace was born safely at home, accompanied by our amazing birth team, as we planned on January 29th. Once the rush of delivery settled, I realized Jace had Laryngomalacia - or a ‘floppy airway’. We took him to our pediatrician the next day, who confirmed. We both wanted to make sure due to the floppy airway & water birth, he didn’t need any suctioning as he just sounded a tad ‘wet’. In our area, only emergency departments have the type of suction we would need. So, non-emergent, we headed there. We were taken to the well baby waiting room, because Jace was well. No signs of distress. Eating well. Happy. Breathing well. The respiratory therapist agreed on the floppy airway and heard what the pediatrician and I did, too. But just wanted to wait & observe for an hour then send us home- no suction needed. Until the ER doctor came in. As soon as he heard Jace was born at home, his response was “we always get to deal with the horrible outcomes of home birth”. He completely dismissed the Laryngomalacia, the only reason we were there, dismissed his normal vital signs and lack of any symptoms and went straight to saying Jace immediately needed: blood work, urinalysis, spinal tap, prophylactic antibiotics, “possibly antivirals”, and a cranial ultrasound. He went so far as to say “we only have one NICU bed left and it needs to be his”. He was completely bullying us into these insane interventions on a HEALTHY baby. We ended up being there 8 hours and having to persistently decline all interventions. At 3 days postpartum as a mom, it was overwhelming, exhausting, & infuriating. As a Nurse Practitioner, it was heartbreaking. It was fear driven & judgmental medicine, not clinical or research based. & the fact that it could happen to US - a medical professional who’s specialized in pediatrics- broke my heart even more for all the other families who’ve gone through bullying & intimidation based on fear. To all my mamas: trust yourselves, trust your instincts, be an advocate & always ask questions ❤️ #homebirth #postpartumrecovery
