Bro’s a picky eater 🙄 This snacky worm is named Chaetogaster and it seems like it prefers eating ciliates like Stentor coeruleus (the blue one) rather than Spirostomum (the long white one) 😳 Just as earth worms, Chaetogaster is an segmented annelid worm! It lives in freshwater and moist soil but some have symbiotic relationships with snails and have been seen living in their mantle cavity! They protect the snails by preying on a parasitic flatworm named Fasciola hepatica. In this case, the Chaetogaster I found seems to be free living and preying on ciliates but they also have been seen feeding on diatoms, rotifers, amoebae and flagellates. As you might’ve able to see in the clips, some ciliates have an amazing defence mechanism; they’re able to contract themselves real fast so they can espace predators! Because of their elongated shape, Spirostomum seems to escape from the worm’s mouth more easily than the round Stentor. It could also be a matter of taste because Chaetogaster are known to be picky eaters and sometimes reject preys when they aren’t that hungry 😅 Chaetogaster plays an important role in the aquatic food web since ciliates, which they mainly snack on, feed on bacteria which feed on decaying organic matter. Ciliates then get eaten by small animals like water fleas, copepods, dragonfly larvae, mosquito larvae, smol fish and annelid worms like Chaetogaster! Chaetogaster also get preyed upon themselves by a variety of small animals.
