💭 Follow your passion or follow the money? What are your thoughts? In high school, when we were tasked with figuring out what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives (yikes), counselors would often advise: “Follow your passion! The money will come!” For me, college & career decisions weren't about passion, but about stability & peace of mind: ⏳ I wanted to study skills that would stay relevant for decades 💸 I wanted to maximize my salary while minimizing tuition paid ~ Here’s why I don’t think “follow your passion” is always the right advice for young people: 1️⃣ You may not know what your passion is I think it’s unreasonable to expect a 17-yo to have done enough exploring & experimenting to know what their passion is. And if you’re making a college decision based on that, 4 years of your life + $100k in tuition is a hefty price to pay for the wrong decision. 2️⃣ Following your passion is a privilege Not everyone can afford to follow their passion. Many young people need to think about how to support their families and their future selves. Many don’t have a financial cushion to fall back on if their passion fails to put bread on the table. 3️⃣ You run the risk of ruining your passion by making it your job When you put pressure on yourself to monetize your passion, it might start feeling more like a chore (I've experienced this firsthand). 4️⃣ Following the money & enjoying your passion aren’t mutually exclusive If you pick wisely, you can find a career that: *allows you to save/invest for early retirement AND *gives you time to explore your passions As a software engineer, I feel well-compensated, have peace of mind, AND have free time to explore my interests. 5️⃣ Realistically, the money might not follow Maybe you’ll be making bank a few months into your music career…or maybe you won’t. Following your passion is good as long as you have a realistic understanding of both possibilities & are prepared to find a way to support yourself if the money doesn’t follow. #goals #personalfinance #finance #womenwhoinvest #investing #invest #investingforbeginners #millenialmoney #travel #creditcards #points #richlife #save #womenandmoney #budget #budgettools
