The smell of autumn leaves is so comforting 🥰 watching them under the microscope is as well! Every spring, trees produce a huge amount of chlorophyll giving their leaves a nice bright green colour which mask the other yellow, orange and brown carotenoid pigments. Chlorophyll as well as carotenoids are present in chloroplasts and are essential for trees to synthesize their own food source (sugars) by a process called photosynthesis! When autumn arrives and weather gets colder, trees reabsorb nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from their leaves and chlorophyll is slowly degraded. Not only there’s a degradation of chlorophyll that unmasks the beautiful yellow and orange carotenoid pigments already present in the leaf, but there’s also production of another pigment called anthocyanin. Unlike carotenoids, anthocyanin pigments aren’t already present in leaves during summer. The most common anthocyanidins create magenta, red and purple colours and are mainly found in flower petals and developing fruits. The type of anthocyanin synthesized depends of the plant species and this is one of the reason trees don’t have the exact same foliage coloration during autumn! Both chlorophyll degradation in leaves and anthocyanin accumulation are really sensitive to climatic conditions and are associated with stress responses like low temperatures. Videos taken with my iPhone mounted on a BA310E Motic microscope with an @ilabcam ultra adapter 🔬 References: Lee, D. W. (2002). Anthocyanins in autumn leaf senescence. Anthocyanins in leaves.
