Odiyal Kool – Authentic Jaffna Recipe Odiyal Kool is a traditional Jaffna Tamil dish, a thick and nutritious seafood soup made with odiyal flour (palmyra root flour), seafood, vegetables, and spices. It’s packed with flavors and represents the rich culinary heritage of northern Sri Lanka. Serves 10 Ingredients: 	•	2 crabs 	•	4 mullet fish, cut into big pieces and salted 	•	500g prawns 	•	1L water 	•	2 cups long beans, chopped 	•	½ coconut, cut into small pieces 	•	1 cup cooked rice 	•	1 handful musucceti leaves (முசுச்செடி) – also known as Cleome gynandra (Spiderwisp) 	•	15 tamarind pods, soaked in 1 cup water Spice Paste: 	•	1 tablespoon black pepper 	•	20 dried chilies 	•	6 garlic cloves 	•	10 shallots 	•	1 small piece of ginger 	•	1 teaspoon turmeric powder Method: 	1.	Clean and prepare the fish. Salt the mullet and add all seafood to a large pan with 1L of water. Add the long beans and boil until the vegetables are cooked. 	2.	Grind all the spice paste ingredients and mix with odiyal flour and tamarind water until smooth. 	3.	Add the cut coconut, cooked rice, and musucceti leaves. Break the seafood into smaller pieces. 	4.	Stir in the flour mixture, adding water to achieve the right consistency. Simmer until thick. 	5.	Serve hot.
