There is something about watching them open in the morning over the courtyard of Masjid an Nabawi that stops you completely. Something so large, so graceful, moving so slowly over the most blessed ground on earth. You just stand there. And you watch. And without even realising it your eyes fill. But these umbrellas have a story. Before they existed, pilgrims would sit and pray and wait in the open courtyards of Masjid an Nabawi under the brutal Arabian sun. No shade. No cover. Just their love for this place keeping them there. And in 1971 the idea was first proposed to protect these millions of hearts that travel from every corner of the world just to be close to the Prophet ﷺ. Today there are 250 of these umbrellas standing across the courtyard. Each one 20 meters tall. Each one opening to cover 800 square meters of ground.
