Sad that we
Sad that we "can’t" eat soap ☹️ Soap has been around for a whiiiiiiile and it used to be prepared with melted fat and wood ashes! Some of the first recipes were found written on clay tablets from Mesopotamia dating back to 2500 B.C. Soaps are basically sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids and even occur in nature. For example, plants possess saponins, which have soap-like properties, that are used as defence mechanisms against pathogens like fungi. Plants named Saponaria officinalis was even used to make soap hundreds of years ago! Nowadays soap can be made using various fats and oils like coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, peanut oil, palm kernel oil and beef tallow. Lards can also be used 🫠 You then have to add an alkaline solution like lye (a mix of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide and water) with the oils to trigger a chemical reaction called saponification. This reaction transforms the fats into salts of fatty acids and releases glycerol (glycerin). Glycerin can be separated of the final product or can remain in it and act as a softening agent. The final product, which is soap, acts as a surfactant; it emulsifies greases and separates dirt trapped on a surface by reducing its surface tension! Unfortunately, the soap industry is a very polluting one and the increased use of soap has negative impacts on wastewater. One way to decrease your negative impact on the environment is to buy soaps and shampoos in bar, to fill up your old laundry detergent containers by going to a zero waste store and to buy biodegradable soaps when possible! 😇 Video taken with my iPhone mounted on a BA310E Motic microscope with an @ilabcam adapter 🔬 #fyp #soap #microscope #science
