Low intensity, red light should not cause any significant damage, but staring at high intensity red light sources is a different matter and should be avoided

After having worked with retina specialists for years I personally would not stare right at the sun, red lights, or any bright lights for a duration of time.

I used red light on my face, I had no eye protection but I had eyes closed and after it my eyes were SO blurry, It was the most terrifying thing. Went to bed and luckily they were on ok the next day.
