Stretching an adjoined lug of clay to form the handle of this small cup. It’s a process that begins without the cup whatsoever, by pulling a much longer strand of clay that’s separated into many individual lugs, (blanks, slugs, billets? I’ve seen all kinds of names). If it’s a hot day I’ll store these lugs under a sheet of plastic, so they don’t dry out too much, as ideally, I score and slip them onto the cups and pull them immediately. Obviously, I don’t want the clay to be too soft, as it can quickly loose strength and become misshapen once pulled, but it needs to be soft enough to be easily shaped. Too firm and may end up needing to use excessive pressure to stretch the clay, this increases the chance of tearing off the handle prematurely. The clay being soft also makes it easier to neatly blend the lug of clay into the leather hard body of the cup. Once looped down and joined, I’ll set the handled cups onto a plastic lined board, which I’ll then wrap up tightly for a number of days, (depending on the weather, if the kilns are on, etc), this causes the two components to dry out slowly and acclimatise to each other, and it’s this that prevents any cracks from forming between the once soft clay and the leather hard clay. Cracks can also form if your join is not made strongly enough. The handle blank needs to be pressed and wiggled onto the scored and slipped area, a bit like friction welding, as the surrounding clay that splays out is then worked in with the edge of my thumb, blending it in seamlessly before any more pulling begins. I could write pages about handle pulling and if you would like to learn more about this process, or simply see how I do the entire process, there’s a number of narrated YouTube videos on my channel all about it. #pottery #wheelthrownpottery #handmade #clay #stoneware #ceramics
