You can find nice little creatures in shaded areas 🥰 Clip 1 shows a Stentor coeruleus, the blue whale of the microverse! These are among the largest cells that exist and you can see them with naked eyes. Their blue colour comes from a pigment called stentorin which plays a major role in defence mechanisms. When Stentor is being threatened by a predator, the toxin from the stentorin granules are released in the environment, which cause the predator to retreat! In clip 2 you can see a Nauplius larva, the larval stage of copepods, very tiny crustaceans 🦞 Clip 3 and 4 show a copepod! Or should I say, Sheldon Plankton? 👀 I find him literally EVERYWHERE 😱 maybe he cloned himself to be able to get that crabby patty recipe… 🤔 Copepods can be found in both freshwater and marine habitats and are usually the dominant organisms in zooplankton. They’re a huge food source for small fish, krill and other little animals. Clip 5 shows a huge rotifer from the Notommata species! I used polarized light so you could observe all the muscle strands glow and the content of the stomach shine like diamonds 💎 In clip 6 you can observe a ciliate called Holophrya making its way through colonial ciliates called Vorticella! You can see the oral cilia of Vorticella spinning in order to attract food particles to the mouth. Clip 7 shows an Ostracod under polarized light! Ostracods are crustaceans, just like copepods, crabs, lobsters and shrimps! They possess a two part shell that closes just like mussels and oysters, but they aren’t mollusks like these guys though. They’re around 0,5 to 3 mm long so they can easily be spotted with naked eyes! In clip 6, you can see a ciliate called Frontonia vernalis. Frontonia lives in collocation with small green algae called Chlorella. These little buddies are photosynthetic and in exchange of a well suited habitat and protection from predators, they give Frontonia its monthly rent money as sugar it can feed on 🥰 In the last clip you can observe an annelid worm scraping food off a filamentous algae by everting its pharynx 😄 #biology #microscope #microscopy #invisible #pond #fyp #fypシ #science #scientist #nature #life #wildlife #animal #animals #micro
