I went through SERE in 2000. The second I heard the static in the trailer I got a chill because I knew what was coming.....😐

one of my drill sergeants in basic liked to "train" us by blasting music and other recordings, and he played BOOTS a few nights in a row on loop. when our commander found out, he was demoted...

The real-world context of the poem makes its use in the trailer even more fascinating. That’s not just regular marketing, it’s a history lesson & an incredibly effective tone setter.

The slow slip into insanity and the sound of the voice are the most chilling thing I’ve ever heard. Gave me a visceral reaction.

I am terrified of how desensitized I have become to these kinds of audios. I am crying but not for the audio but because of how I have realized that none of this made me feel a thing :/

this linked with this movie is making me think of the book version of World War Z & it's discussion of the psychological effect of the "total war" that zombies were.

so, listening to it once obviously no reaction. idk how id handle it for 48 hours nor do I want to know. but I'm confused on how its used? is it to help them survive if they are POW?

I don't understand why they say, "no discharge in the war." what do they mean? discharge from service? and why was it used for that specific training? what does it have to do with not breaking?

15 years ago or so my friend was wearing an SERE T-shirt. He found it a thrift store it didn’t say anything but SERE and had a cool knife on it. He didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know what it was.

Thank you for putting this together, and sharing. That poem, read by that person is the definition of haunting.

I had a friend tell me once that if I wanted to know what stress training was like, listen to that poem while sitting in a particular yoga stance for hours in a dark room. I get it now.

Can confirm SERE school plays this still. 2 straight days of this blasting while you’re tired, hungry and miserable. Start to hallucinate after awhile because they play it on top of itself.
