Ever wondered how leeches look under the microscope after a good blood meal? 🩸 yeah me neither but here we are 🤠 Leeches, like earthworms, are part of the Annelida phylum which is characterized by a segmented body plan! Every repeated segment, which you can see as small rings along the body, contains components of excretory, circulatory and nervous organ systems. While earthworms are from the Lumbricidae family, leeches are regrouped into the Hirudinidae family but they’re still closely related. Leeches are mainly found in freshwater but some have adapted to marine habitats and even warm and moist terrestrial areas. They’re abundant in ponds, swamps, lakes, rivers and streams. They usually measure between 2 and 6 cm and have flattened body. Lots of leeches are carnivorous and feed on small invertebrates but some others suck blood out of their temporary hosts as temporary parasites while others are permanently attached to their hosts using their muscular suckers and their three rows of teeth 🙃 Blood sucking leeches are able to secrete an anticoagulant in their hosts which allows them to get a very big meal! They also play a role as vectors of blood parasites of fish, reptiles and amphibians. I should really consider putting some gloves on when sampling 😅Suspense soundtrack is a courtesy of @accelerator.jengold 🌩Video taken with my iPhone mounted on a BA310E Motic microscope with an @ilabcam adapter 🔬#horror #horrortok #microscope #fypシ゚viral #fyp #life #earth #blood #horrortiktok #planetearth #nature #worm #worms #bio #science #scienceismagic #vampire #scientist #biology #biologia #microscopio #scienceexperiments #fypシ #microscopy #pond #technology #bio #fypage
