The most foundational intermarriage happened in the 5th–8th centuries. The Visigoths, a Germanic people, established a kingdom over the Hispano-Roman population of the Iberian Peninsula. Although the Visigothic elite initially practiced some endogamy and maintained legal distinctions (e.g., separate law codes), over time they converted to Catholicism, adopted Latin/Romance language, and intermarried with the local Hispano-Roman majority. This mixing contributed to the ethnogenesis of the medieval Spanish population. Later Spanish (and by extension many Latin American) lineages therefore already carry a Germanic (Visigothic) component alongside Roman, pre-Roman Iberian, and other elements. In the colonial casta logic discussed earlier, this was simply part of the “Spanish” blood that later mixed further with Indigenous or other groups. Direct large-scale German settlement in Spanish America was limited because Spain tightly controlled immigration and preferred subjects of the Crown. Exceptions existed: • The Welser banking family (German) received a concession to colonize parts of Venezuela in the 1520s–1540s. German conquistadors, administrators, and settlers (e.g., Ambrosius Ehinger, Nikolaus Federmann) operated there and some intermarried or formed unions with local Spanish and Indigenous women. • Individual Germans, Flemings, and other northern Europeans occasionally entered Spanish service as soldiers, merchants, or artisans and formed families in the colonies. Overall volume remained small compared with later periods. Most “Germanic” input into Hispanic colonial populations at this stage still came indirectly through the already-mixed Spanish settlers who carried Visigothic ancestry. #germanic #nordic #castizo #whitehispanic #jbw
