Spider’s silk is one of the most amazing materials that exist on Earth! Its strength and extensibility (you can stretch it without easily breaking it) makes it incredibly unique. It is one of the toughest materials in the world! (a spiderweb strand is several times stronger than an equally thick strand of steel). . The thickness of a strand of spiderweb silk may fool you as they are much thinner than they appear. Yes, it is true that some of the silk strands in this video may be thinner than normal due to the fact that they stretched when I collected them with my slide. However, the difference of thickness between the spiderweb strands and the human hair was huge. . In the video, I mentioned that each strand of spider’s silk is 1000 times thinner than a human hair. This was information that I obtained from a Science journal preview (doi: 10.1126/science.aaw0932) where they discussed a scientific paper on the structure of spider’s silk: Strength of Recluse Spider’s Silk Originates from Nano-fibrils Qijue Wang and Hannes C. Schniepp ACS Macro Letters 2018 7 (11), 1364-1370 DOI: 10.1021/acsmacrolett.8b00678 . Just in case you are wondering, the human hair I used in this video is not my own. It is my wife’s! She is a brunette and her hair is nicer and longer than mine so I used her hair instead of mine ;) . For this video I used an Olympus CX31 microscope at 40x, 100x, 200x, and 400x magnification. #spiders #spiderweb #spidersilk #naturalezaperfecta #arachnids #artinnature #shapesofnature #drbioforever
