Deaf Senior Dog Accidentally Forgotten During Evacuations Was Trapped In Shelter Alone As Fires Grew Close... During the evacuation of one crowded LA shelter, a facility directly in the fire’s path, staff were left scrambling to organize the transport and relocation of their 60+ canine residents. In the chaos, one dog was left behind. Henree, a deaf senior dog, couldn’t hear the commotion of the evacuation. He didn’t know to bark for help. As everyone fled to safety, Henree was accidentally left behind. Please understand that this was a life-threatening event, and everyone, including shelter staff, was in danger. Forced to move impossibly fast with little time to communicate, mistakes were bound to be made. For 24 agonizing hours, Henree waited. He had no idea that the people who cared for him hadn’t meant to leave him behind. Mistakes happen in emergency situations, and human hearts break under the weight of them. We can’t imagine the intensity of evacuating so many animals with such little advanced notice. The staff were devastated when they realized Henree was still at the shelter, and they sent out an urgent plea for help. We couldn’t turn away. Driving through the fire zone, choking on smoke, we made our way to the shelter, not knowing what we would find. Henree was still in his kennel, but his breathing labored. It was clear he’d been inhaling smoke for far too long. We rushed him to the vet in critical condition, where doctors confirmed severe smoke inhalation and a few pesky parasites. His age has made recovery an uphill battle—his body isn’t what it used to be, and every step forward is slow and fragile, but Henree is fighting, and so are we. His lungs are weak, and his breathing remains strained, but we’re doing everything in our power to help him heal. He is currently in a foster home being showered with so much love and the best care possible. He deserves a chance to live out the rest of his days free from pain, surrounded by love. He will never be forgotten again. Please, donate today to help cover the costs of his hospitalization and emergency care. You can also send him a get-well gift from his wish list to show him how much he is loved. We will be sure to keep you updated on his progress when we can. Thank you for your generous support.
