Eland might not have the speed of their fleet-footed relatives, but they don’t have to; their might is a pretty good equalizer. Rarely do they flee from four-legged predators. When attacked or threatened, the females will typically stand their ground, protecting their young, either alone or in a united front. Groups often create an impenetrable circle by bunching all their heads together, forming a lethal ring of kicking back legs. Male elands also rarely flee but, instead, go on the offensive. In a mixed group, large males sometimes take front positions to help protect the calves and pregnant females. Outfitted with almost a ton of flesh and thick spiral horns, even lions think twice about including them in their dinner plans. The same can’t be said for their calves, the young, and the sickly. Simba and his pride happily pick off any weak links. Fortunately for the eland, their defensive strategy changes regarding humans. Experience has taught them that flight, even at only 25 mph, is a better alternative. Our witnessing their hindquarters fading into the savanna on several occasions proved that point fairly well. For a contemporary safari adventure and to learn more about eland and other African wildlife, read or listen to Cries of the Savanna. Available on Amazon, most retailers, and DIRECT at Suetidwell.com. Also FREE on Kindle Unlimited and streaming on CarbonTV. Videos DM for credit.
