In Thailand just say your going to Cambodia or Laos, Book a room on booking dot com and put pay later. Get your conformation print it off then cancel the room I did this no problem. no charge.

U can also buy a ticket that is fully refundable with no fees. Avianca offers these and I’ve needed to cancel and it works great.

You definitely should have one of these for the UK. In 1997 customs was asking me for proof of a return ticket. My flight home was from Paris, Tokyo then Australia and they were still grilling me.
