windows simply displays your sizes in kibibytes but labels them as kilobytes

never understood why kibibytes exusted, why cand we all agree that 1024 is 1k, not 1000

that's why when you buy a “2TB” drive it shows up as 1.8 TB on Windows

It's big-byte ripping us off every time we buy a hard drive, skimming 24 bytes off the top for every KB. I'm pretty sure those 24 bytes are where the government install their tracking software 👀

Always thought that Kilobyte, Megabyte etc.. were 1024 of the lower one. This should be basic knowledge. But does MacOS actually use just 1000 bytes as a Kilobyte? That’s just lazy writing ✍️🔥

:
1 byte == 8 bit (01 binary)
1 KB should be 1000 Byte, but it 1024 because of binary system and easier address in memory

I’m not tossing out the metric system for the sake of powers of 2. I want to know how many bytes something is just reading it without a calculator

And mechanical storage is measured in mega/giga/terra BYTE, but the flash chips in your SSDs and phones are measured in mega/giga Bit 👀

so in fact kibi and kilo are the same, but problem that kilo 10^3 and kibi are 2^10

tldr: hdd manufacturers consider a kilobyte to be 1000 bytes, windows considers it to be 1024 bytes, which is why your 1tb hdd shows up as less than 1tb

Hotdogs are sold in packs of 1000, but divided between packs of 1024 buns. So you get 97.65% of what you think you're buying. Simple.

why would mac and chip manufacturers use 1000 bytes? it's not a power of 2. but it is a thousand which is what kilo means ig
