But it's not a scoreboard if I can't keep score on it. It's a phase board to keep track of phases, which is helpful but if I gotta write down the score I might as well write down the phase.

we used a wooden spoon as a "skip target" and a rope for the "skip knot" (first and last place).

So we usually keep score, but even so, this is a great way to keep track of who is on what phase especially when you’re trying to figure out your skip situation!
