Reaching lengths of over 3 feet and weighing in at nearly 10 pounds, coconut crabs are the largest living terrestrial arthropods. When compared to other extant species of arthropod, the staggering size of these crabs makes them a rare oddity on our planet. This terrestrial crab may be massive by today’s standards, but way before our time, giant arthropods were by no means an uncommon sight on Earth. Millipedes reaching lengths of 8 feet, giant sea scorpions as big as a cars, or even dragonflies with 28” wingspans have all previously existed on our planet. While that all may have been hundreds of millions of years ago, those animals still lived and died on the same rock we find ourselves on. Unfortunately, we will never be able to see the giant arthropods of our ancient world, but we still have the coconut crab. To me, they are one of the coolest animals on earth. Not for size or might, but because they stand as one of the last living examples of the colossal creatures that once called Earth home, long ago. #nature #wildlife #animals #science #education #foryou #foryoupage #viral #comedy #memes #funny #halloween #spooky #discovery

Cambrian Crunch: Anomalocaris & Trilobites Scientific Names: Anomalocaris Canadensis & Trilobita Trilobites may have been absolute titans in terms of evolutionary fortitude, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t getting absolutely bodied throughout their entire existence by a variety of early apex predators. Throughout the trilobites 300 million year existence, these early arthropods would have had to contend w/ the crushing beaks of cephalopods, the vice-like grip of huge sea-scorpions, and the gaping jaws of large placoderms of the Devonian, like Dunkleosteus. After having named all those trilobite munchers it may seem that I forgot the most important of all, everybody’s favorite “weird shrimp,” Anomalocaris! However, it unfortunately seems that the notion of Anomalocaris being able to eat most (if any) trilobites was largely a fabrication of the Big Anomalocaris Corporations. Just kidding, but this new assertion is simply due to the fact that Anomalocaris seemed to lack the dental hardware to be able to tear through the thick exoskeleton of trilobites. This odd shrimp sported a very soft & relatively small mouth, that was likely much better equipped to slurp up soft-bodied creatures, like worms or other bottom-dwellers. This diet also makes much more sense when you look at the physiology of Anomalocaris, particularly the two probing arms that hung in front of this predator’s mouth. It seems unlikely that these arms were particular powerful or used to subdue larger prey (like trilobites), rather that they were used to sift through the muck and rile up worms and other small invertebrates that Anomalocaris would then eagerly would slurp up. #animals #science #history #educational #funny #viral
