Elphaba and Nessarose are technically Munchkinlanders by birth and status, but they don’t match the typical Munchkin look or lifestyle. They’re taller, they don’t have the trademark red hair, and they’re raised apart from everyday Munchkin life. That’s why characters like Boq get called “a Munchkin boy,” while Elphaba and Nessa never do.

My take is the polar opposite direction - I got the impression because her dad was mayor she seen herself as “above” the other Munchkins, almost to the point that class lifted her out of Munchkinhood altogether so to speak? So for her this was her “dropping her standards” by considering someone so “below” her

I think it’s because they are not munchkins, even though they are from munchkin land. In the original 1939 version the munchkins are around 4 feet tall, while even the wicked witch is 5 something.

Nessarose grew up in Quadling country, didn't she? In the book at least. From a Munchkin family but they travelled for her dad's work.
