Armored Leafcutter Ants, Acromyrmex species, farm their own food. A fungus in their nests that they grow in chambers of cut up leaves. This strategy is so successful that other ants, like army ants, raid leafcutter colonies to eat their larvae, and spread epidemics upon the ants and their fungus. Their worst enemy is Escovopsis, the leafcutter ant plague, which eats leafcutter ant fungus and produces chemicals which brainwash farmers to abandon their nests. But leafcutter ants are fighting back by farming bacteria. Leafcutter plague is weak to antifungals produced by bacteria like Streptomyces. The leafcutter ants raise and pass down cultures of special bacteria, Pseudonocardia, from mother to daughter colonies. Pseudonocardia kills other bacteria, except for antifungal producers like Streptomyces, which produce drugs which can cure leafcutter plague, similar to how we use penicillin. And new research shows that the ants' drugs are more effective than our own drugs, and drugs like attinimicin are being evaluated for clinical trials against common fungal infections.
