@historywithcara: In 1891, milionaire Kate Birdsall Johnson commissioned artist Carl Kaher to paint 42 of her cats, who all lived in luxury in a 3000-acre summer estate in California. She had so many, and loved them so dearly, it is rumored that her husband may have referred to them as “my wife’s lovers.” Kaher studied the cats for three *months* to truly capture their likenesses. He was paid $5000 for the 6-by-8.5-feet piece, the equivalent of $170k today. Johnson lent the painting to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. The same year, she died, having left a large sum in her will to guarantee the care of her cats. #art #arthistory #history #arttok #cats #arthistorytok #historytok
