It's probably unhealthy in some way, but whatever competitive drive in me seems to thrive knowing there is something to aim for, even if it's some meaningless arbitrary number. Sure, I run for fitness and health, but for me it's about having a purpose and a goal. My brain seems to be wired to need a target. A favourite saying of mine is that general ambition will give you anxiety, while specific ambition will give you direction. Without an upcomign race, there is no way I'd be sticking to a training plan, showing up for every workout.
