Backing down a giant sportfishing yacht in Puerto Rico. Why? EXPLAINED: Fishing boats often back down or reverse while fighting billfish like marlin and sailfish for a few key reasons: 1. Gain Line Quickly Backing down allows the boat to quickly take up slack line and gain line on the fish. This is especially important in tournament situations where getting the fish to the leader and tagged/released as fast as possible is crucial. 2. Keep Fish in Front of Boat By reversing, the captain can keep the fish directly behind the boat rather than being pulled off to the side. This gives the angler better leverage and angle to fight the fish. It also prevents the line from being cut on the stern if the fish runs across it. 3. Tire Out the Fish The prop wash and turbulence from backing down can help tire out and subdue the fish more quickly. The angler can also use aggressive drag settings when the boat is reversing to further exhaust the fish. 4. Avoid Being Spooled If a hot fish makes a blistering initial run, backing down rapidly allows the angler to regain line and avoid being spooled, especially when using lighter tackle. However, backing down can be dangerous if not done properly. The main risks include: - Swamping the cockpit with water over the transom - Overheating engines by reversing too fast for too long - Losing control in rough seas and crashing into the fish Experienced captains carefully consider sea conditions, boat design, fish behavior, and angler ability before deciding whether to back down or fight the fish while going forward. Safety is the top priority. #fishing #boat #boats #sportfishing #sportfishingboats #fishinglife #fyp
