We don’t know what dark matter is but we know what it’s not. We know it has a gravitional pull that affects things around it. Imagine a tree blowing in the wind, we can see that something is moving it

another evaluation is the gravitational lensing caused by “dark matter”. Light bending where there’s no visible matter. That or space is just really curvy and textured.

The fabric of space isn’t flat. Dark Matter and Dark Energy make it “wrinkly” like tall mountains and low canyons. Dark matter is the canyons where matter collects that creates galaxies, stars, etc…
