Replying to @Aim Buc Aurora has been diagnosed with Avian Ganglioneuritis or AG. AG is an autoimmune condition caused by avian bornavirus. While most birds with avian Bornavirus are completely fine their whole lives and never show signs of disease, a percentage of them develop AG and have more complex issues like Aurora. Avian Ganglioneuritis (ag) is an inflammatory response inside the body where the body attacks its nervous system and GI system, and it can manifest in a few ways..it can cause neurological symptoms, behavioral symptoms, or digestive symptoms. Aurora seemed to have all 3. Our first signs of sickness were weight loss and undigested food in her poop, followed by some increasingly heightened behavior and repetitive odd neurological symptoms. Treatment in her case consists of making sure she has easy to digest nutrition, like a fortified pellet, and anti-inflammatory drugs like onsior to treat the body’s inflammation response in her nervous system and GI tract. It can also help to have some other medications like gabapentin to relieve neurological symptoms. AG has no cure, so Aurora will always have it, but the virus that causes it is not easily transferable to other members of the flock so we are not worried about her being near or around other birds. It’s mostly passed from parent to chick. There is no reason to test birds that are not showing symptoms of bornavirus or AG, and in reality, the testing is super unreliable anyway. In many cases birds who have it test negative multiple times in a row, and so many birds have it but are asymptomatic and fine their entire lives, so knowing isn’t actually helpful unless you plan on breeding your birds. Many breeders test the parents or chicks for Bornavirus and your bird or its parents might be negative initially, but you really need 3 negatives in a 6 week period, with each test being 2 weeks apart, to be sure the birds are actually negative. And again, a positive test is NOT a death sentence. Over half of captive pet birds have ABV and it never develops into AG) Even though AG is not curable it does come in waves called “flares”. These flares are periods of sickness where the body needs additional support. She may go weeks or even years without another flare. Flares can be caused by stress because stress weakens the immune system in birds. Stress can look like changes in the environment or even hormones. Now that we know she is sensitive to things like traveling or hormone season we can prepare her body with lots of supplemental nutrition and have medications handy so we can get ahead of her flares. Thankfully during times she’s not in a flare she does not need any additional medications. #aurora #macaw #rescue
